John Suh (born February 9, 1995), known mononymously as Johnny, is an American singer, dancer, rapper, and DJ based in South Korea. He is a member of the South Korean boy band NCT as well as its sub-unit NCT 127, which are managed by SM Entertainment.

Early life

Johnny was born on February 9, 1995, in Chicago, Illinois to Korean parents. He is an only child.[1] Johnny attended Glenbrook North High School in Chicago and trained during his summers in order to complete his education.[2] He later enrolled in a performing arts course at the School of Performing Arts Seoul.[3]

Career

2008–2016: Pre-debut

In 2008, Johnny auditioned in the SM Global Audition and was accepted into SM Entertainment that same year. In 2012, Johnny was suspected to be part of the debut line-up of the South Korean boy band EXO and could be seen rehearsing with the other members in later-found images. He still has a close relationship with the EXO members and once stated that leader, Suho, was like a ''real brother''.[4][5]

In December of 2013, he was introduced as a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team managed by SM Entertainment.[6] In 2014, Johnny, alongside other SM Rookies members, appeared in Exo 90:2014, a reality television series in which labelmate Exo recreated music videos and performed popular K-pop songs from the 1990s and early 2000s.[7][8]

2016–present: NCT

In December 2016, he was announced as a new member of NCT 127, the second sub-unit of NCT, which previously debuted in July. He officially debuted with the unit in January 2017 with the release of their EP Limitless. [9]

On March 20th, he and fellow NCT member, Jaehyun, served as the DJs of the SBS Power FM radio program "NCT's Night Night!"; stopping this role due to busy overseas schedules, their last broadcast being in January 2019. [10]

In September 2020, SM Entertainment announced that NCT would be releasing their second studio album as a group, NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 1, with the second part NCT 2020 Resonance Pt. 2 following in November. In the first album, he participated in "Music Dance" BY NCT 127, and joined NCT U with the A-side track "Misfit" as well as B-side tracks "Dancing In The Rain", "Faded In My Last Song". In the second album, he participated in NCT U's titled track "Work It" and B-side track "Raise The Roof". On December 4, NCT 2020 released the final single, "RESONANCE".

Other activities

Johnny has his own show on NCT’s Youtube channel called ‘JCC (Johnny’s Communication Center)‘ where he uploads vlogs weekly.

In 2022, Johnny was invited to attend the Met Gala where he wore Vietnamese-American designer, Peter Do, becoming one of a select few K-pop idols to have attended this event.[11] He has been vocal in his support of American designers and the fashion industry.[12]

In 2023, Johnny attended New York Fashion Week, where he wore an outfit designed by American designer, Thom Browne, and collaborated in a photo diary with Teen Vogue.[12] Johnny appeared in the October 2023 edition of Esquire Korea whilst modelling for Longines.[13] He was also announced as a special host of Show! Music Core alongside bandmate, Jungwoo.[14]

In 2024, Johnny made his Paris Fashion Week debut, attending the Acne Studios fall-winter show.[15] He appeared alongside fellow NCT member, Doyoung, in the February edition of Allure Korea.[16] In April, Johnny appeared on the cover of the Elle Korea D edition issue, modelling Golden Goose.
