チャールズ・バーニー・コーリー

チャールズ・バーニー・コーリー（Charles Barney Cory、1857年1月31日 - 1921年7月31日）はアメリカ合衆国の鳥類学者である。オリンピックのゴルフ競技にも参加した。

略歴

ボストンに生まれた。父親は貿易業で資産を築き、コリーは、働く必要はなかった。16歳になった頃には鳥類学に興味を持ち剥製の収集を始めた。どこへでも旅することができた境遇から、すぐにカリブ海、メキシコ湾の鳥類のコレクションが作り上げられた。19歳になった1876年にアメリカで最も古いナトール鳥類学クラブの会員に選ばれ、当時の有名な鳥類学者たち、ウィリアム・ブリュースターやヘンリー・ヘンショー、ラスヴェン・ディーン、チャールズ・メイナードらと知り合い、後にジョエル・アサフ・アレンもクラブに参加した^[1]。

1876年からハーバード大学やボストン大学に入学するが、すぐに鳥類採集旅行に戻り、1877年にはフロリダやマドレーヌ諸島を旅し、翌年はバハマに旅した。1880年にはヨーロッパを旅し、1881年は西インド諸島を旅した^[1]。

1883年にアメリカ鳥学会創立のための会議に招かれた48人の鳥類学者の一人となった^[2][1]。アメリカ鳥学会では1903年から1905年の間、会長を務めることになる。1887年にボストン自然史協会の学芸員に任じられた。コーリーが収集した標本は19,000に達し、自宅に収容できなくなると、シカゴのフィールド自然史博物館に寄贈し、鳥類学の学芸員に就任した^[3]。コーリーの収集した600点の鳥類学の文献は、1894年に有名な収集家のエドワード・アイヤーによって購入された後博物館に寄贈された。コーリーは1906年に財産を失い、動物学のキュレーターとして博物館で有給で働くことになり、残りの人生を博物館で働いた。フロリダと西インド諸島に定期的に採集旅行を続け、時には他の博物学者の最終旅行のために資金を提供した。

著書には"The Birds of Haiti and San Domingo" (1885)、"The Birds of the West Indies" (1889)や"The Birds of Illinois and Wisconsin" (1909)などがある。"Catalogue of the Birds of the Americas"は、没後、オーストリア生まれで、フィールド自然史博物館で働いた、カール・エドワード・ヘルマイヤーによって完成された。

いくつかの新種の鳥類を記載した。ミズナギドリ科の種、Calonectris borealis はジョヴァンニ・アントニオ・スコポリが記載した、Calonectris diomedea と同じ種とされたことがあったが別種とされている。

ゴルファーとして1904年のセントルイスオリンピックのゴルフの個人戦に参加したが予選で途中棄権した。
