Polycope er en slekt innenfor familien Polycopidae - den eneste gjenlevende i overfamilien Polycopiodea, som igjen er den eneste undergruppen av underordenen Cladocopina - i ordenen Halocyprida av Myodocopa-muslingkreps, som er små krepsdyr. Derimot er det også en familie av utdødde arter i ordenen, Quasipolycopidae (Jones, 1995). Artene i Polycopidae-familien er ganske distinkte fra øvrige Halocyprida-arter, og det har vært foreslått at de utgjør en egen orden.

Slekten inneholder minst 16 og inntil 50 anerkjente arter, og dessuten inntil 10 underslekter.

Taksonomisk plassering av gruppen

Taksonomien til muslingkrepsene er omstridt og baserer seg på studier av morfologi snarere enn genetikk. Det er generelt omstridt å fin-inndele organismer taksonomisk. En moderne oppdatering av systematikken gis av Martin and Davis, som for øvrig foreslår at Polycopidae-artene er distinkte fra Halocyprida-artene og kan rettferdiggjøre en egen orden^[1], som følgende oversikt følger ned til nivået orden, mens lavere nivåer i enkelte tilfeller følger Catalogue of Life:^[2] - og i hovedregel WoRMS-databasen.^[3]
