Stephen M. Gersten

Stephen M. Gersten (2 de dezembro de 1940) é um matemático estadunidense, especialista em grupos finitamente apresentados e suas propriedades geométricas.^[1]

Gersten obteve um bacharelado em 1961 na Universidade de Princeton^[1] com um Ph.D. em 1965 no Trinity College (Cambridge), com a tese Class Groups of Supplemented Algebras, orientado por John Stallings.^[2] No final da década de 1960 e início da década de 1970 lecionou na Universidade Rice. Em 1972–1973 foi professor visitante no Instituto de Estudos Avançados de Princeton.^[3] Em 1973 foi professor da Universidade de Illinois em Urbana-Champaign.^[1] Foi palestrante convidado do Congresso Internacional de Matemáticos em Vancouver.^[4] Na Universidade de Utah foi professor em 1975.^[1] Um de seus orientados de doutorado foi Edward William Formanek.

A conjectura de Gersten motivou considerável pesquisa.^[5]
