Amerikan Kitap Ödülü birçok kitaba ve kişiye "olağanüstü edebi başarı"dan dolayı yıllık olarak verilen Amerikan edebiyat ödülüdür. Ödülün 2010 dağıtım bildirisine göre, "kategorisiz, adaysız, bu yüzden de kaybedeni olmayan" ve "yazarların diğer yazarlara verdiği" bir ödüldür.[1]

Ödül, 1978'de kurulan ve 1980'de açılışını yapan birçok kültüre odaklı, kâr amacı gütmeyen Before Columbus Foundation tarafından yönetilmektedir.[2][3]

Ödül aynı zamanda ırk, cinsiyet, etnik köken veya tür sınırlaması yapmadan Amerikan edebiyatına yapılan mükemmel katkıları onurlandırır.[4] Toni Morrison, Edward Said, Isabel Allende, bell hooks, Don DeLillo, Derrick Bell, Robin D. G. Kelley, Joy Harjo ve Tommy J. Curry örneklerindeki yazar, kamu bilimcisi, şair ve tarihçi gibi çeşitliliğe sahip eski kazananları bulunmaktadır.

Ulusal Kitap Ödülleri

1980'de alakasız olarak Ulusal Kitap Ödülleri Amerikan Kitap ödülleri olarak adlandırıldı. Daha sonra 1987'de tekrar eski adına dönüp Ulusal Kitap Ödülleri oldu.[5] Bu yedi yıl içinde iki ödülün birbiriyle hiçbir bağı olmadı.
